PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
One of the great classics of English literature, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice cleverly satirises the world of middle class greed and aristocratic ennui and makes a brilliant and romantic comedy out of the absurdity and injustice of class and snobbery.
Mrs Bennet is desperate to marry off her five daughters. One of the daughters, Elizabeth, is introduced to Mr Darcy, a wealthy aristocrat. At first sight, Elizabeth decides that Mr Darcy is an arrogant and unpleasant man. He is equally horrified by the vulgarity of her relations. Elizabeth is also hotly pursued by the other gentlemen - George Wickham, a dashing and unscrupulous officer and her obsequious cousin, the Reverend William Collins. She manages to elude their advances, and slowly she comes to realise that she is hopelessly in love with Mr Darcy.
